Education: An Integral Component to Better Care

Education is the key to many positive outcomes for healthcare professionals. It reiterates educational goals and objects and it makes people strive to learn more for themselves and their profession. Let’s face it, geriatrics is a complexity within itself. A surge of research in prominent geriatric disease states such as osteoarthritis, pain management, diabetes, and congestive heart failure have had numerous implications on how we care for our patients. The newer medications to the market have intricate pharmacologic components that allow for increased efficacy to a specific target site, pharmacokinetic parameters, and drug interaction profiles. We are just beginning to realize the need to study these agents in the geriatric population and more data is needed.

So how can you keep up? Education! It should be a key component to every healthcare professional to dedicate some time to education. The knowledge on disease states and drug products is vast. Giving some of your time to keep up will pay off in the long run…. you will be surprised.
